Inside Flypaper: Granola Products
How one Flypaper employee climbed his way into the outdoor apparel industry.

There’s no denying the impact that the internet and digital marketing have had in the last twenty years. The ability to reach people around the world and introduce a local product or brand to people anywhere on Earth has transformed the way we buy and sell almost everything. The internet has truly revolutionized the way that people own and operate their businesses.
Flypaper’s own Conner Scott has firsthand experience with this truth. Seven years ago, while still in high school, he and his brother combined their passion for climbing with the sewing skills they had learned in home economics. The result was the creation of their climbing gear company: Granola. The brothers created a website and used social media to spread the word about their products.
By harnessing the power of the world wide web and continuing to improve their products, the brothers were able to grow their business to the point where they had 40 retailers across the United States. In the past seven years, the brothers have continued to refine their strategies and understanding of digital marketing. With a focus on social media and retargeting, Granola has continued to remain viable in the market. They work with Highpoint, a climbing gym in Chattanooga, Tennessee, and Climb Nashville. Both facilities rely heavily on the Granola brand.
Conner has used his job at Flypaper to help Granola improve its digital footprint. He has learned a tremendous amount about SEO while working for Flypaper and has used that knowledge to continue to improve Granola’s website. This has helped to spur the company’s continued success and growth. Because of the lessons learned, Granola’s organic traffic has increased. This, in turn, has led to more sales as the company has transitioned to an e-commerce platform.
Conner’s experience embodies much of what Flypaper is at its core. Fueled by people with a passion to help small businesses succeed and who have a thorough understanding of the significance of digital marketing, the Flypaper team is uniquely positioned to advocate for small companies like Granola. Using their knowledge of digital tools and their love for helping local businesses, our team is trained to assess the needs of clients and make effective recommendations as needed. While some businesses may initially be interested in enhancing their social media presence, for example, Flypaper consultants can take an objective look at the client’s circumstances and help to ensure that they are a good fit for that platform. If their business is one that does not easily lend itself to social media, we can give businesses an honest, experienced list of reasons why precision targeting or Google Ads may be a better fit for them. Our personal experience and understanding of digital marketing continue to help us to be a tremendous resource for the small business owners we meet on a daily basis.
Ultimately, digital marketing helps to give smaller businesses a platform from which they can compete with larger, more established companies. What began simply as a passion project by Conner and his brother has grown to a fully actualized business thanks to the opportunities created by online marketing. And, because of the lessons he has learned as a small business owner in a digital world, he is better able to educate and empower his Flypaper clients by sharing his own experiences with them. Thanks to the internet and the capabilities of digital marketing, Conner has been able to sell high-quality climbing gear and apparel through Granola and help his Flypaper clients do the same.

Google’s search landscape is evolving, and with the rise of its Search Generative Experience (SGE), businesses need to rethink their SEO strategies. Unlike traditional search, which ranks results based on keywords, SGE harnesses AI to understand search intent, delivering direct answers, summaries, and interactive guides. The shift is significant, and businesses that adapt will be the ones who maintain visibility in this new search environment.

This third-generation family business has been providing exceptional tree removal and stump grinding services since 1977. Despite their long-standing reputation, they recognized the need to modernize their marketing efforts to remain competitive in today’s digital landscape. In 2020, they partnered with Flypaper to build their first website and establish a solid online presence, paving the way for continued growth.
